Riverston gap is located in the middle of Rattota – Pallegama road in Matale Distric. Being located in a windy gap on a range of scenic mountains with frequently changing climate, Riverston was highly popular with local travelers. Two Telecommunication towers are setup on the summit of the Riverston mountain. The climate is changed in every minute. Some times it get little sun rays. Some time a tiny rain with cool wind. The forest is consisted with pigmy trees. “Maha rewla” (Old man’s beard) and many orchids are driven out their loneliness. The mist is gained them a fresh & wet look for ever.

While we step towarrds summit we could see the beauty of the nature in Riverston. There was heavy wind flow at the wind gap on the Riverston mountain,

Sapphires are type of rare gemstone found in places such as Australia, Madagascar, Burma, Sri Lanka and Thailand. It is a variety of a mineral called Corundum which is a type of Aluminum Oxide. It is the same variety of mineral as the Ruby, and all other colors of this mineral apart from the red and orange are called Sapphires. The orange variety of Corundum is called Padparadscha, and is found Sri Lanka and is highly prized and valued.

Usually pits are dug close to rivers where secondary alluvial (sedimentary) deposits are usually found; gems such as sapphires and even rubies are fond in such environments. To gain access to this sort of gem baring gravel, miners dig pits that are often between 5 and 50 feet deep, by hand, in order to always be aware of the nature of the sediments of the they are removing from the pits. Once it is the correct depth, the pits are then dug out horizontally in several directions to maximize mining area and to minimize surface damage, allowing farm land and paddy fields to be in existence on the surface. It is desirable that you, who visit the forest,be sensitive to the need to conserve forests such as Sinharaja.Contrary to the chaos and congestion prevailing in urban areas,it is in the forest that the quality of life is best expressed. In addition, man finds peace and tranquility in forest.
Forest like Sinharaja are essential for the sustenance and growth of urban societies. As such we should endeavour to keep sizeable areas for maintaining life susupporting ecological processes and genetic diversity.
Allow yourself sufficient time to about within the nature's green cathedral and enjoy its beauty and majesty whether you be a photographer, artist, scientist or a nature lover.
Please leave it as you find it.
The forest is sleeped in deep legend and mystry. The word Sinharaja means, lion (Sinha) king (raja) and the popular belief is that the legendary origin of the Sionhala people in Sri Lanka is from the descendants of the union the lion king who once lived in the forest and a princess.
The,the spirit of the legend remains captured in solitude in the silent forest and the rising mist of the early dawn.More than time however separates the modern explorer in the Sinharaja forest from its legendary inhabitants, man has rapidly penetrated the seemingly inaccessible wilderness of the Sri Lanka's rainforest which once covered perhaps over 100,000ha.Of the South Western hills and lowlands. The present reserve in but a glimpse of its former glory, occupying a narrow silver of undisturbed and logged forest, scrub and fern land.It was declared an international Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978,then a
National Wilderness Area in 1988 under the National Heritage Wilderness Area Act No.3 of 1988 and subsequently a World Heritage Site in 1988.
To the casual observer, the forest represents atropical rain forest with adense tall stand of trees, steep and rugged hills etched by numerous rocky streams and rivuleth. The value of forests such as Sinharaja are well known for their functions as watersheds and store-housre of great biological wealth. It is a rich treasure trove of nature with a great diversity of habitats and a vast repository of Sri Lanka's endemic species found no where else in the world. Sinharaja therefore,
represents an irreplaceable genepool,a refugia for all those rare
