How to reach Sinharaja natural rain forest

ENJOY THE WILDERNESS

Enter the Forest with a willingness to be guided by fleeting shadows and inexplicable noises experiencing the wilderness.There are several forest track and nature trails to provide spring-boards for such exploration.

HOW DO GET THERE

Kudawawa"Vana Nivahana"

  • Colombo to Mathugama or Rathnapura and then to Kalawana and Weddagala at which point you turn off the main road to the Forest Department Camp at Kudawa.Public transport is available up to Weddagala via Mathugama 117kms,and via Rathnapura154kms Weddagala to Kudawa 5.6kms.Public transport facilities are available fromWeddagala to Kudawa recently.

Pitadeniya Conservation Center

  • Colombo to Mathugama and then to Deniyaya via Neluwa.Travel 10kms,from Deniyaya to Mederipitiya and then walk 3kms,futher and cross Gin Ganga to reach the camp.The camp is located by the side of Gin Ganga in Dombagoda Forest

Morningside Conservation Center

  • Colombo to Rakwana via Deniyaya or Rathnapura and procced through suriyakanda and turn off the main road through Morningside state track to Forest Department Conservation Center.Visitors can reach up to Rakwana by public transport and have to walk about 6km through state track if private transport is not arranged.
  • The best period to visit the forest is between December and early April or between August and September
  • You require a permit to enter the forest.Basic accommodation is available to Forest Department Camp at Kudawa,on prior reservation.Please apply Consevator General of Forest,Forest,Department,Rajamalwatta Road,Battaramulla.
  • A nominal feeis changed at the entrance to the forest.Please produce your identity card or passport.
  • Please carry your food rations.Arrangements can be made for preparation of meal at the camp on payments of nominal fee.
  • Bring along your binocular an dcamera.You will have plenty of oppotunity to use them
  • Don't forget of carry a leach repellent.
  • Rainy days-mostly aftemoons-are quite common.Take som reading materials.
  • Illustrated trail guides are available at the Extension Centre,to acquaint you with the plants and animals commonly found in the forest.
  • Many research activities are being carried out the forest and you are welcome to inquire about them
